27 May

Good ol’ Knoxville. This makes the third Memorial Day weekend we’ve been here and it’s starting to have that nice, familiar, “coming-home” feel. 🙂 We woke up fairly early as we usually do on the weekend (a by-product of early bedtimes!) and we sat around the table talking and waiting for Matilda to wake up. When she did she was good and happy and even let me get some pictures of her!

Heather, John and Matilda had to go to a birthday party for a while so Zach and I headed downtown to Market Square where the absolutely enormous farmer’s market goes on on Saturdays. We’ve gone every year! We walked around checking out the wares before hitting up the food trucks for lunch. Zach chose the Sweet and Savory truck and got a biscuit that had some incredible bacon and pimiento cheese on a homemade biscuit.

It was SO good. It wasn’t that big which was disappointing because we wanted more and more of it! We finished it off while waiting for my order to come up, haha. I chose the Flank Steak Breakfast from the Tootsie food truck.

It was a combination of cheesy grits, fresh egg and flank steak with green chile. It was good but Zach’s was better! The food trucks were great though for dishing out fresh, local, farm food and I would frequent them often if we had some of those. We decided to get some exercise and walk the short distance over to World’s Fair Park where the Sunsphere is. We got a few pictures by the canal…

Before heading into the big grassy area by the fountains where we got a lot of pictures, some with the Sunsphere in them!

We love horsing around 🙂 As evidenced by the next set of photos we took in an empty amphitheater…

🙂 One last picture in the park-

At this point we walked back over to Market Square, Zach got some salsa verde and we got ice cream from the “famous” Cruze Dairy truck. Zach got a scoop of salted caramel and I got a scoop of strawberry cheesecake.

Zach’s was all right but mine was awesome!! It was no Trader’s Point but probably in the top 5 ice creams that I’ve had. I didn’t finish mine (mostly cause Zach loved it so much I wanted him to eat the rest) but it was a good afternoon snack. Then it was time to go back to the house to meet up with John, Heather and Matilda. We spent just a quick minute changing into walking clothes and then went to another Knoxville favorite of ours, the Cherokee trail!

We have done this trail each time we’ve visited and it’s such a good place for exercise. The whole trail ends up being like 5.25 miles and it goes through the middle of a neighborhood with gorgeous homes and a lake. We took baby Matilda along and I wore her in the ergo baby briefly but she wasn’t a fan of it! I didn’t smell or feel enough like Mommy. 🙂 I will definitely want one of these things when I have a baby though!!

The four of us enjoyed our long walk and talking and at the end I recreated a picture from last year.

Last year in this same spot I took a picture of John and pregnant Heather and now there is a baby to be in the picture!!

A baby who is working on sitting up. 🙂

After we got back and showered/got ready for dinner, my Aunt Teresa (Heather’s mom and Matilda’s nana) came over to watch the baby so us adults could go to dinner! We hit up a favorite spot from last year- Sunspot!! This place is so excellent in all categories- food, drink, atmosphere…it’s got it all. Heather and I both got these delicious cocktails that look a lot like water-

It was white wine, st. germain’s elderflower and soda water. Delicious and very easy to drink! So easy that it didn’t last me that long and I also got a little split of champagne. 🙂 We ate chips and verde before our entrees arrived and when they did they looked superb!

Zach and I both got specials for the night. Mine was a turkey quesadilla with sweet potato chips. The quesadilla had fresh turkey, arugula, pepperjack cheese, avocado and several other ingredients that were wonderful but I just don’t remember them! Zach got a crab & seafood stuffed rib eye with mashed potatoes and asparagus. His was also awesome. This place is 2 for 2! I ate half of my quesadilla, Zach ate a quarter and we boxed the other piece up. We also boxed up some of his as well. We tried to hunt down a snack from Coffee and Chocolate but they don’t make the desserts they used to anymore! Zach was especially sad as he had an obsession with their dulce de leche. That’s okay though, we’d already eaten enough for the night. 🙂 We went home and had a low-key evening. Heather had to spend awhile getting the baby down, Zach and John played some French card game and I worked on editing my loads of pictures.

We were in bed by 10:30 and were looking forward to the next day in Asheville!

Saturday’s Food Journal:

  • Lunch – 1/2 breakfast biscuit, 1/2 flank steak breakfast, 1 scoop ice cream
