NEWPORT

28 Jun

I was so excited for this Newport, RI day and the weather forecast looked to be iffy so I was nervous. Luckily we had the most gorgeous weather at every turn and the whole day worked out like a dream!! We got there fairly early in the morning, parked and set out for the Cliff Walk.

The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile trail that runs up along the cliffs with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was breathtaking!

I was envious of the runners who get to have this as their view every day!! We set out and it was wonderful. Beautiful mansions along it as well. There was a part of it we had to skip and go through town then hop back on because it was still damaged from Sandy. Such destruction that hurricane brought… The end was less path and more rocks and it was fun climbing all over them. 🙂

After this we took the looong trek through town back to our car and set out for lunch. Flo’s Clam Shack was the place and I was glad we got there early because this place fills up big time!

We ordered the “chowda combo” to share: 3 clamcakes, clam chowder and a beer and we got 1 a’la carte stuffed quahog (clam).

The stuffed quahog was good but the clamcakes dipped in the chowder was perfect! We got to sit upstairs with the most beautiful view and it was just quintessential vacation!

After this we checked into our Airbnb stay for Newport- a little house.

It was hot in there, but otherwise cute! We didn’t stay long before we were out and driving Newport’s Ocean Drive that goes past more mansions and beach areas. We stopped in Fort Adams park and then we did some exploring and found a beat up house and old tower that we climbed.

After the drive we went back to our place and sat out on the deck playing cards and having some wine. 🙂

When it was dinner time we got ready and drove to The Mooring – a local place known for seafood and of course seafood is what we got. First I had a rum cocktail.

IMG_2756

Then we ordered 3 oysters and they were excellent!

IMG_2758

I had 1 piece of bread and then dinner came! I ordered a salad and the fish taco appetizer.

IMG_2762

This came with two fish tacos and I gave one to Zach. In exchange, of course, I had some of his seafood pie- scallops, fish, crab and shrimp under a puff pastry. MMMMM!!!

IMG_2759

This seafood pie was one of the best dishes yet! So tasty. We got to eat out on the water and that was fun.

IMG_2757

Our plan after dinner was to go to the beach and watch the sun set but it was pretty cloudy. We decided to go anyway and I am SOOO glad we did. It was beautiful!!

IMG_2769 IMG_2772 IMG_2793

The sky changed so many colors and the sun made an appearance at the end, beautiful!!

After this we drove back to our place, parked and then walked downtown to Brick Alley Pub for after dinner drinks. They have spiked milkshakes there and it’s the best idea. I had a PB Cup spiked milkshake and it was a delicious, slightly alcoholic dessert. Yum. 🙂

We walked home on tired feet and crashed! The next morning I got up and went for a run along the Cliff Walk so I could be just like those locals but it was SO foggy you couldn’t see the ocean at all! I guess the locals have to put up with that too. 🙂 After a nice, quick run we left Newport and headed for Provincetown, MA: the tip of Cape Cod!

I’ve been reading about your trip. Thank you for taking us a long this journey with you. Being from Arizona, I’ve never been further than Chicago, so it’s so neat to read about all these places you get to see! I’m lovin’ the pics and learning a lot and now you make me want to go to Rhode Island, especially to run on the Cliff Walk!
